The previous Trump administration saw a notable decline in illegal immigration. The prompt actions at the border led to significant outcomes. However, the ongoing efforts now involve a lengthy process of identifying, detaining, and deporting unauthorized immigrants residing in the U.S.
Since President Trump took office, there’s been a shift at the southern border; these days, fewer foreign nationals caught trying to cross unauthorized are being released. Under the Biden administration, the “catch and release” policy allowed vast numbers of illegal immigrants to enter an already strained immigration system, which can take years to resolve. If asylum requests are rejected, they ultimately must be deported.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently reported that over 500,000 illegal immigrants have been deported since Trump assumed office, with hopes of surpassing 600,000 by year’s end.
Moreover, researchers from the Center for Immigration Studies estimate that since January 2025, over a million illegal immigrants have voluntarily departed the United States.
In the same timeframe, DHS announced the arrest of 485,000 illegal immigrants, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) noting that about 70% had either been charged or convicted of crimes in addition to their immigration violations. This seems plausible, particularly considering that at least 435,000 foreign nationals were previously convicted of crimes in the U.S., with another 200,000 yet to be indicted.
Many of these criminal immigrants were not in custody, living freely within communities, and not closely monitored. While some arrested will face deportation, it’s likely that many will remain amidst protracted immigration proceedings.
The American left appeared surprised by Trump’s swift demonstration that it was, in fact, a lack of political will—rather than a lack of means—that had enabled illegal immigration routes from places like Yuma to the Darien Valley.
For four years, the narrative suggested that rampant illegal immigration was unavoidable, caused by factors outside American control. That perception has now crumbled, similar to the tent camps funded by taxpayers to shelter millions of illegal immigrants.
With this excuse gone, the left has shifted strategies, aiming to retain as many of Biden’s undocumented immigrants as possible.
To achieve this, they’ve turned to national media, left-wing activists, and the illegal aliens themselves to frame any enforcement actions as something harsh. Federal workers are often labeled as oppressive enforcers, even though they are simply executing their responsibilities under the law. The term “Nazi” is misapplied, revealing a lack of understanding about historical contexts.
Regardless of the specifics, every arrest is viewed through a sympathetic lens. To them, undocumented immigrants are always seen as dedicated parents, essential workers, and valuable community members. Figures like Kilmer Abrego Garcia are elevated to media stardom, even when their backgrounds include serious allegations.
Left-wing “abolitionists” aim to dismantle systems they view as oppressive, extending from law enforcement to judicial practices. New York State Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is among those advocating for significant reductions in incarceration, while her fellow Democratic Socialist, Zoran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York, has expressed a desire to eliminate penalties for minor offenses.
Generally, these “abolitionists” want to eliminate all forms of immigration detention, believing in the rights of individuals on an international scale.
The current climate reflects an ongoing clash between global leftists advocating for open borders and conservatives who believe robust nation-states are vital for safeguarding their citizens and ensuring a secure world.
In the coming years, this conflict is likely to manifest particularly in “sanctuary” cities like Portland and Los Angeles, governed by far-left leaderships. Cities such as New York and areas like Arlington, Virginia, are noted for not honoring ICE detainers which complicates law enforcement’s efforts to detain dangerous offenders.
If a future Democratic administration makes it easier to reopen borders and bring in large numbers of unverified “asylum seekers,” it will lose any available justifications for such actions.
If President Trump remains resolute, calm, and aids federal employees in performing their duties despite facing hostility, it may lead to nationwide compliance with federal warrants by the end of his administration. This could enforce a renewed adherence to the rule of law within the country.
Conversely, if the “abolitionist” faction, supported by media and activist judges, successfully hinders enforcement and undermines federal immigration statutes, a new crisis could emerge.
