Immigration Raids in Charlotte Amid Crackdown
Federal immigration agents carried out a raid on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina, the state’s largest city, a move connected to President Trump’s ongoing efforts against illegal immigration.
U.S. Border Patrol agents were observed detaining several individuals in the predominantly Democratic city, as part of an operation aimed at targeting “illegal aliens who have committed violent crimes.” This action has drawn criticism from local officials.
“Americans should be able to live without fear of violent criminal illegal aliens,” stated Tricia McLaughlin, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
She noted that they are deploying DHS law enforcement to Charlotte for the safety of residents and to address public safety risks, though details about the operation, including the exact number of officers involved, were not disclosed.
While the total number of arrests is still unclear, local authorities described the operation as “causing unnecessary fear and anxiety” in a community with over 150,000 migrants. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and other officials expressed support for residents simply trying to live their lives.
In a joint statement, they emphasized their commitment to protecting the rights of all individuals in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County and highlighted the importance of understanding one’s rights.
Amidst concerns, officials continued to reinforce the importance of the city’s diversity, urging peaceful protests and advising residents to contact local police for assistance, who were not involved in the federal operation.
Residents reported an uptick in Border Patrol and ICE checkpoints since Friday, with some businesses temporarily closing due to fear as rumors spread about an increased federal presence.
On the other hand, Mecklenburg County Republican Chairman Kyle Kirby supported the federal operation, interpreting it as fulfilling President Trump’s mandate from the 2024 election to prioritize border security.
“Those who are legally in this country have nothing to fear,” he stated.
The Department of Homeland Security has previously conducted extensive immigration raids in several states, including California, Illinois, Oregon, and New York, which have occasionally led to unrest around federal agents.
Last week, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico fired upon Border Patrol agents in Chicago during a similar operation.
