USMNT-Paraguay erupts into disorder with 'highly hazardous' fight

U.S. Men’s National Team Friendly Ends in Chaos

CHESTER, Pa. — The friendly match between the U.S. men’s national team and Paraguay, held in Philadelphia, ended on a tense note.

In the closing moments, a confrontation erupted between Alex Freeman and Paraguay’s Gustavo Gomez over a loose ball, resulting in chaos as players from both teams stormed the field. In the fray, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino ended up on the ground.

Pochettino recounted that he was looking away when the clash began, and felt a shove upon turning to help. Fortunately, he mentioned that Paraguay’s coach, Gustavo Alfaro, intervened, urging staff to assist him.

It started with just Freeman and Gomez, but the situation escalated quickly as teammates rushed in, throwing punches amid the melee.

At one point, Freeman was seen pushing a Paraguayan player aside after that player had taken hold of an American defender.

Things took a further turn when bottles were thrown from the stands onto the field.

Goalkeeper Matt Freese, representing New York City FC, expressed his satisfaction with teammates rallying together during the match but was less thrilled with some tactics from the Paraguayan side.

“Honestly, there were some cheap shots from their end,” he stated. “But being a team means we have each other’s backs—no matter the moment.”

Freese added a lighthearted note about how he quickly jumped into the action but was coy about whether his intervention made a difference.

“I’ll keep it diplomatic,” he said with a chuckle.

The altercation resulted in six yellow cards being issued, with Omar Alderete receiving a red card.

Pochettino characterized the brawl as a “very dangerous situation” and expressed his disapproval, stating, “I don’t like this situation.”
