Tragic Incident on California Beach
A Canadian father tragically lost his life while attempting to save his five-year-old daughter as powerful flash floods struck California.
Yuji Hu, a 39-year-old from Calgary, was visiting Garrapata Provincial Beach in Carmel with his family when the incident occurred on Friday, as reported by the local authorities.
Witnesses say a large wave pulled his daughter under, prompting Hu to leap into the water in a desperate bid to rescue her.
The waves, reaching heights of 15 to 20 feet, took both of them further out into the ocean.
According to Monterey County Sheriff’s Commander Andres Rosas, Hu’s wife also jumped in to help. At one moment, they received reports that Hu had managed to grab hold of his daughter.
The mother, while trying to reach her family, lost contact but eventually made it back to shore, where their two-year-old was waiting.
Hu was retrieved from the water by beachgoers and an off-duty California State Parks employee, who had previously trained him in lifesaving techniques.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The unidentified mother was treated for hypothermia and kept in the hospital overnight but was released the following day. Thankfully, their younger child did not sustain any injuries.
Sadly, Hu’s daughter, last seen wearing a white shirt, remains missing. Officials noted that she was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
A large, coordinated search for the child continued into Saturday but was halted at sunset. Once the search efforts were paused, recovery operations along the beach were set to carry on.
Authorities mentioned that the grieving family requested privacy and would not be discussing Hu’s death at this time.
This incident unfolded amid an intense series of atmospheric rivers that have impacted California’s south-central coast, leading to devastating flash floods, landslides, and severe weather conditions.
Coastal areas experienced rainfalls of up to an inch per hour, with more than four inches recorded in Santa Barbara County just the day before.
As the storm advanced, there were reports of a variety of other weather-related tragedies. For instance, a 71-year-old delivery driver lost his life after being swept away in floodwaters near Sacramento. The man had called 911 for help, but the current was too strong, and he could not be revived when found.
Additionally, at least four individuals died when a wooden boat believed to be carrying Mexican immigrants capsized in turbulent waters off San Diego. Four others from that boat were hospitalized.
In the Sierra Nevada region, snowfall is projected to exceed a foot, compounding the risks faced by communities still recovering from previous natural disasters.
In light of the severe weather risk, mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for properties in areas affected by recent fires, highlighting ongoing concerns about potential debris flows.
