UN Security Council Endorses Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan
On Monday, the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution backing President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace initiative for Gaza, appointing him as the chair of the Peace Council.
The resolution received a favorable vote of 13 in favor, with 2 abstentions. Notably, Hamas expressed its agreement on October 8, and by October 13, key leaders such as Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had officially supported the plan alongside President Trump.
“I’m really pleased to announce the incredible support from the UN Security Council for a peace commission that I chair, including some of the world’s most influential leaders,” Trump shared through a post on Truth Social.
He continued, noting that “this is a truly historic moment that will be remembered as a significant acknowledgment in UN history, paving the way for more peace globally!”
Prior to the vote, Trump also acknowledged the contributions of countries that backed the resolution but aren’t council members, including Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE.
“Thank you to all the nations within the UN Security Council: China, Russia, France, the UK, Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, South Korea, Pakistan, Panama, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Somalia,” he added.
The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Walz, released part of a statement outlining the council’s intentions:
The resolution will guide humanitarian aid delivery, foster development in Gaza, and support a Palestinian technocratic committee overseeing Gaza’s civil administration as the Palestinian Authority implements essential reforms.
Today’s resolution lays the groundwork for contributing nations to establish an international stabilization force and encourages investment from international financial institutions aimed at reconstructing Gaza. The stabilization force aims to secure areas freed from Hamas control.
Achieving prosperity hinges on security. Security is vital for governance and development to flourish. This International Stabilization Force will enhance the security situation, aid in Gaza’s demilitarization, dismantle terrorist infrastructure, eliminate weapons, and ensure the safety of Palestinian civilians.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the resolution’s passage a significant achievement in a post on X.
He remarked, “Today’s UN Security Council resolution endorsing President Trump’s peace plan marks a milestone in establishing a peaceful, prosperous Gaza governed by the Palestinian people, free from Hamas.” He emphasized that “[President Trump] Real, measurable progress is being made in the region. With this vote, we’re closer than ever to a demilitarized and stable Gaza.”
