Tragic Fire in the Bronx Claims Life of 90-Year-Old Woman
A beloved 90-year-old woman in the Bronx lost her life in a fire that severely damaged a residential building on Tuesday night, according to officials.
The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) received the call about a blaze at around 8:53 p.m. from the second floor of a two-story apartment building located at the intersection of Boston Road and Forest Avenue.
Approximately 60 firefighters and emergency responders quickly arrived and managed to control the fire by 9:36 p.m.
Tragically, the elderly woman was discovered inside and was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by the NYPD. Her name has not been released pending family notification.
Neighbors expressed their grief over the loss of the woman, describing her as a cherished member of the community.
“She was a very friendly, religious woman and well-known,” shared Drita Joseph, a longtime resident of the area. “We often exchanged flowers because we both love gardening. She taught me quite a bit about it.” It’s hard to imagine such kindness gone, really.
“It’s a sad night—not just for us neighbors but for the entire community,” Joseph added, reflecting on the impact.
Another resident noted that the victim was wheelchair-bound, making it unlikely that she could escape the fire.
“I never saw anyone come out of that apartment. She was just a nice lady, always waving hello when you saw her,” said Stacey, who lives nearby.
Residents were left uncertain about their living arrangements, feeling uneasy about sleeping in their homes that night.
Hours later, Joseph mentioned that traces of smoke lingered heavily in the air, and the unpleasant odor from the fire persisted.
Authorities stated that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
