Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick charged with allegedly misappropriating FEMA disaster funds

Indictment of Florida Rep. Sheila Chafferas McCormick

The Department of Justice announced that Florida Representative Sheila Chafferas McCormick has been indicted by a Miami grand jury for allegedly stealing millions in disaster relief funds and misusing campaign contributions.

As detailed in the indictment, Chafferas McCormick is accused of conspiring with her brother Edwin Charfilas and several others to misappropriate around $5 million from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) resources. It appears that they funneled these funds into various accounts to hide their origins, using a notable portion for her 2021 congressional campaign or for personal purposes.

If found guilty, she could face a prison sentence of up to 53 years. That’s a long time, right?

Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the situation, describing the alleged crime as “particularly selfish and cynical.” She emphasized that no one is above the law, highlighting that public figures who exploit taxpayer money for personal gain will be held accountable.

Interestingly, the charges stem from a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination contract that Charfilas McCormick and her brother were involved with in 2021 through their family-owned healthcare company. The indictment claims that this company received a $5 million overpayment from FEMA in July 2021.

FBI Director Kash Patel remarked on social media that Charfilas McCormick and her family are suspected of pilfering funds from FEMA and laundering them through acquaintances for personal benefits, including campaign contributions.

Furthermore, it’s alleged that Charfilas McCormick and Nadège LeBlanc utilized straw donors to secure campaign donations and redirect FEMA funds to their affiliates, which then made those contributions.

In response, Representative Greg Steube, a Florida Republican, expressed outrage, calling it one of the most blatant breaches of public trust he has ever witnessed.

The Florida Republican Party has urged Charfilas McCormick to step down, stating that her actions are “absolutely disgusting.”

As of now, Charfilas McCormick’s office has not provided a response to the inquiries regarding these serious allegations.

Interestingly, she was already under scrutiny by the House Ethics Committee in 2023 over possible campaign finance violations from the 2022 election cycle. Despite this, she managed to secure re-election for a third term in Congress in 2024, serving on both the House Veterans Affairs Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
