Ohio’s Ban on Transgender Athletes in Women’s Sports
When President Trump took office, one of his initial actions was to take measures aimed at safeguarding children’s sports by signing an executive order that barred men from competing in women’s teams.
Years later, in 2024, Ohio enacted legislation to ban men from participating in women’s sports. However, the enforcement of this law remains problematic, with reports indicating it is often overlooked.
Recent undercover work by Accuracy in Media sheds light on this situation. They interviewed Jody Zunk, assistant principal and athletic director at Eastwood Middle School in Pemberville, Ohio. During the conversation, Zunk noted, “We’re very open as a school, but… in the larger community, there’s still some resistance. This is a small rural area, and venturing into the countryside sometimes brings some pushback. But we’re here to protect pronouns — he or she?”
Zunk further elaborated, “Ohio just passed a lot of laws under the current administration. I tend to lean left, so this was significant for me. However, due to the Trump administration and Ohio’s Republican stance, our umbrella organization, OHSAA, recently enacted some legislation too.”
She also shared insights about past regulations: “Previously, we could allow transgender students to join either men’s or women’s track and field teams regardless of their biological sex.”
At one point, the reporter made a lighthearted comment about having his sister’s adopted birth certificate, joking that it allows her to pass as a young woman. Zunk responded, “Maybe they just don’t tell anyone.”
Adam Gillett, president of Media Accuracy, mentioned their team has investigated over 250 schools. “It’s quite troubling everywhere,” Gillett remarked. “In Texas, we found identical situations occurring in various districts.”
He pointed out that both Ohio and Texas are red states, prompting him to question what may be taking place in more liberal states like Illinois, Rhode Island, or California. “These extremists prioritize their agenda over the safety of girls at every turn,” he remarked.
