Michelle Obama Comments on Female Presidency Sparks Debate

In a recent conversation, former First Lady Michelle Obama expressed her belief that the United States isn’t quite ready for a female president. This statement has stirred strong reactions from various prominent women within the left and media circles, who have voiced their disagreement publicly.

During a live discussion on November 5 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City, Obama, talking with actress Tracee Ellis Ross about her new book, touched on several topics, including political gender bias. They discussed Kamala Harris’ loss in the 2024 presidential race and why Obama herself doesn’t want to run for president.

While many Democrats often speculate about a possible presidential run by Obama, she reiterated her stance, choosing to focus on her book instead.

“Unfortunately, as we’ve seen in past elections, we’re not ready,” Obama remarked, referencing Kamala Harris’ defeat to Donald Trump in the last election.

“So, don’t look at me about running, because you’re all lying. You’re not ready to be a woman. You’re not yet. So don’t waste my time,” she continued. “We still have a lot of growing up to do, and sadly, many men don’t feel led by women. And that was evident.”

Reflecting on the 2024 election, her husband, former President Barack Obama, urged men to consider the implications of voting and the historic significance of their choices, highlighting the topic of reproductive rights.

Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi voiced her disagreement with Obama’s comments while expressing her respect for her. “I know that ‘that view’ saddens all of us, but I think we have to change,” she shared on CNN, questioning the excuses around whether a woman can serve as commander in chief.

She also referenced her own long career in politics, first elected to Congress in 1987, as a sign that barriers are being broken down. “I always thought we’d have a female president long before we had a female Speaker of the House,” she said.

Pelosi, who made history in Congress, recently announced plans to retire in 2027.

Shortly after Obama’s comments, co-hosts from ABC’s “The View” also pushed back against her views. Co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin mentioned that she respectfully disagreed, attributing the challenges faced by women candidates to sexism, rather than a lack of readiness among Americans.

Another co-host, Joy Behar, added that flaws exist in candidates regardless of gender and noted that many countries have successfully elected female leaders.

When pressed on who the ideal female candidate might be, Griffin responded, “We don’t have a candidate yet.”

Co-host Ana Navarro shared a personal anecdote about asking Harris if the country was ready for a woman president, to which Harris emphasized the importance of encouraging young girls, especially girls of color.

Sunny Hostin contributed to the conversation by discussing systemic issues in society, noting that many people shy away from acknowledging their biases, which can impact perceptions about leadership.

“I’ve never met anyone who raises their hand and says, ‘I’m a racist.’ But there are those who seem to ignore the reality of racism,” Hostin remarked, referring to the underlying challenges in the nation.
