NEA Faces Backlash Over Training on Gender Transition

One of the leading teachers’ unions in the U.S. is under fire for a planned training session aimed at helping its members navigate gender transition in the workplace. This training includes guidance on pronoun usage and strategies to counteract transphobia. However, it also features materials that label conservative opponents in less-than-flattering terms.

The National Education Association (NEA) has published information about various training programs available to its over 3 million educator members. These include a session titled “Advancing LGBTQ+ Justice,” set to occur from December 2-4, 2025. Additionally, there’s another related session planned from January 13-15, 2026, focused on racial justice in union activities.

The NEA emphasizes the importance of understanding LGBTQ+ issues, stating it’s vital for providing supportive and inclusive guidance. The training’s goals encompass fostering a common understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, developing counterarguments against anti-LGBTQ+ policies, and creating strategies to confront implicit biases and stereotypes.

Defending Education, an organization advocating for educational transparency, highlighted concerns regarding the NEA materials for the LGBTQ+ justice training. These documents include directives from activities like Cornell University’s Transgender Guide, offering insights for those who may be transitioning at work.

Interestingly, the materials address the ongoing debate about transgender athletes in sports. They hint that opponents have gained the upper hand, acknowledging a need to communicate the advantages of including biological males in women’s sports while mitigating backlash through culturally informed narratives.

There’s also mention of “gender unicorns,” a concept often promoted by transgender activists to illustrate a spectrum of gender identities, which some find overly simplistic. The literature promotes using correct gender pronouns to create safe environments, stating that “gender identity and gender expression don’t always align.”

Critics, like Defending Education’s Kendall Teets, argue that the NEA’s training sends misleading messages and promotes a race-based, gender ideologically driven educational approach. They voice concerns that the NEA is prioritizing activism over education, as observed in various training materials that adopt a combative stance against conservative views.

The NEA’s documents frequently refer to those who oppose their ideology as “villains,” adding that anti-trans rhetoric is being used by conservatives to consolidate power and deepen divides. This has brought additional scrutiny to the union, suggesting that its federal charter may need reassessment given its apparent pivot towards far-left activism, which detracts from educational objectives.

Fox News Digital attempted to reach the NEA for a response, but details regarding their official comments on the backlash remain pending.
