Jay Leno Excludes Politics from Stand-Up Routine

In a recent interview, Jay Leno shared that he has decided to steer clear of political themes in his stand-up comedy. Speaking on NBC’s “Today,” he mentioned that this choice has positively impacted ticket sales, which have reportedly increased by 20 to 30 percent. He believes that many people simply don’t want to be lectured during a night out.

“I travel a lot, so I just take politics out of it completely,” Leno told host Hoda Kotb. The comedian explained that while he can delve into political humor on TV, he has to be more cautious when performing live in various regions, particularly in conservative areas where a significant portion of the audience may not share his views.

Reflecting on the challenges of performing in today’s climate, Leno acknowledged that comedy has always faced its hurdles. He pointed out that the current environment isn’t necessarily more difficult than in the past. “We’ve always had tough times,” he said, adding that, while issues have shifted, the core of comedy remains the same.

When considering the future of comedy, Leno expressed a sense of optimism. He likened it to a donkey that requires a firm prod to get moving, implying that people will eventually tune in to what comedians offer.

Although Leno loves political humor, he feels comedy should provide an escape from daily pressures. He reminisced about the mixed reactions to his political jokes during his hosting days, recalling the amusing contradictions in audience feedback he received, often from different political leanings.
