The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has secured significant loans in preparation for next year’s midterm elections, highlighting a lack of leadership and ongoing struggles to resolve a government shutdown.
According to a report from Politico, the DNC has reached out to the Federal Election Commission about a $15 million loan.
The report indicated that the DNC created a loan line earlier this month as an initial investment aimed at supporting candidates in New Jersey and Virginia, along with strengthening state parties for the upcoming elections. However, the DNC’s loan situation starkly contrasts with that of the Republican National Committee, which had $86 million accessible at the end of September.
Politico acknowledged that while the DNC has borrowed in the past, it is unusual to do so at this scale so early in an election cycle.
This news emerges amidst Senate Democrats’ urgency for government funding following a prolonged shutdown, with reports indicating they have received little in return for their efforts.
Over a week into the shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) criticized Democrats as being “completely rudderless,” accusing them of engaging in “costly political gamesmanship.”
The DNC has reportedly spent over $15 million this year to cover expenses from former Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, which, along with her running mate, left-leaning Governor Tim Walz (D-Minnesota), was unsuccessful against President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
According to a Breitbart News report, Harris’ campaign raised over $1 billion but accumulated $20 million in debt during its final weeks.
In June, DNC Chairman Ken Martin faced the daunting task of addressing the party’s financial troubles following significant losses in 2024, which left the committee underfunded.
Breitbart also mentioned that during August, in regard to the midterm elections, President Trump suggested the possibility of holding a Republican National Convention (RNC) prior to the elections, highlighting the Republican Party’s robust performance.
He stated, “The Republican Party is in great shape. Millions are joining our effort to make America great again. We succeeded in every aspect of the presidential election and are set to expand on our success in the midterms.”
The president added, “We’ve raised significantly more funds than the Democrats, and we’re focused on correcting the detrimental policies of the Biden administration while fostering America’s recovery and growth.”
