Stephen Colbert Critiques New NYC Mayor Zoran Mamdani

Stephen Colbert recently expressed his skepticism regarding the incoming Mayor of New York City, Zoran Mamdani. During a Thursday episode of CBS’s The Late Show, Colbert suggested that “everyone in America sees something” in Mamdani’s message, which he finds a bit misleading.

In a segment featuring Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Colbert referenced a photo of the senator alongside Mamdani, mentioning her support in his campaign. He attempted to present Mamdani’s emphasis on government intervention as an “affordable” solution, yet he oddly insisted that “everyone in America sees something in it.”

“New York has unique challenges and doesn’t always align with the national voting trends,” Colbert stated, but he underscored the resonance of Mamdani’s focus on affordability and dignity for workers. He went on to suggest that Mamdani’s message could be effective beyond New York, potentially appealing to broader audiences akin to a Broadway performance.

Colbert dismissed the notion that Mamdani’s message is solely relevant to New York. “Sure, he tapped into issues that matter to a diverse city, but I believe it has national relevance,” he remarked.

Moreover, Colbert pointed out that criticisms of Mamdani seem to arise from both political sides. Warren backed Colbert’s comments, praising Mamdani for prioritizing affordability for working families.

It’s worth noting that Mamdani, who has some radical influences, has backed a controversial plan for a municipal grocery store that critics argue lacks the necessary funding.

Interestingly, the New York Times recently highlighted that Mamdani’s political journey began as a student council vice president candidate at the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. His early campaign promises included providing fresh juice from locally sourced fruit, a commitment he later admitted was unrealistic.
