Family Celebrates Thanksgiving by Hospital Bedside of Fire Victim
The family of Bethany McGee, who suffered severe burns after an attack on a Chicago CTA train, will mark Thanksgiving alongside her in the hospital. She is recovering from burns that affect more than 60% of her body.
“Bethany is a cherished daughter, sister, step-sister, granddaughter, and aunt. She’s really a great friend—sensitive, caring, intelligent, and imaginative,” her brother John shared. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her recovery.
He added, “She truly loves her life in Chicago. Her gentle nature endears her to every pet she encounters. She enjoys engaging in table and video games within her community, always ready to spark a conversation and make newcomers feel at home. She’s just so kind.”
On November 17, the 26-year-old was riding the L train when Lawrence Reed, a man with a troubling history (having been arrested 72 times, 22 since 2016), allegedly poured gasoline on her and set her ablaze.
In a harrowing scene, she managed to escape the train at the next stop, running off while engulfed in flames. She collapsed on the platform until a good Samaritan came to assist her. Her injuries were severe, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
John McGee responded to inquiries politely, stating, “We aren’t making any comments for now. Thank you for your understanding.”
Despite the devastating circumstances, the McGee family expressed gratitude to be together with Bethany during this Thanksgiving, appreciating the “exceptional” care she’s receiving from her medical team.
Most of Bethany’s medical expenses are covered through insurance and funds for victims, yet the family initiated the GoFundMe after receiving many requests to help.
“Since she faces a long recovery, alleviating financial stress would be a tremendous relief. While gifts aren’t necessary, anything received will directly support Bethany,” they expressed.
President Trump spoke about the shocking incident during the annual White House turkey pardon, criticizing a justice system that allows repeat offenders like Reed to harm innocent individuals. “They burned this beautiful woman on the train. A man arrested 72 times. Just think about that; a liberal judge released him again,” he emphasized, indicating that efforts are underway to improve safety in the city, which he called “out of control.”
