New Japanese Pitcher Eyes MLB Opportunity

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ investment in a Japanese pitcher seems to be paying off, especially after the recent World Series where Yoshinobu Yamamoto was named MVP. Aki Sasaki made a key contribution on the mound, and Shohei Ohtani took the lead in Game 7. Now, Tatsuya Imai, a promising right-handed pitcher and free agent, is setting his sights on Major League Baseball, although he doesn’t necessarily want to join the Dodgers.

Imai is currently in a 45-day posting window, allowing him to negotiate with any MLB team. He expressed a strong desire to beat the Dodgers rather than just join them during an appearance on Japan’s TV Asahi program “Hodo Station.” “It would be the most fulfilling experience to triumph over a strong team like that,” he noted, adding some humor to his competitive spirit.

This 27-year-old player recently ended his tenure with the Seibu Lions in Nippon Professional Baseball. Since becoming eligible for MLB teams last month, he has developed from a rocky start in his career into one of the league’s dependable pitchers.

Last season, Imai pitched a no-hitter and made his third All-Star appearance. Across his career with the Lions, he has maintained an ERA of 3.15, pitching in 159 games. Interestingly, he mentioned a preference for signing with a team that does not currently have any Japanese players in its roster.

Imai seems to appreciate the notion of facing cultural challenges, stating, “I want to enjoy figuring things out on my own; I think that survival atmosphere is a big part of the experience.” His recent comments suggest that the Dodgers, despite their interest in securing top international talent, might not land him as a fourth Japanese pitcher for their rotation come 2026.
