Tragic Shooting in Washington, D.C.
Two members of the West Virginia National Guard have died from injuries sustained during a shooting in Washington, D.C. earlier today.
Governor Patrick Morrisey expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “Today, we are deeply saddened to confirm that two West Virginia National Guard members shot in Washington, D.C., have succumbed to their injuries. These brave West Virginians died serving their country. We remain in contact with federal authorities as the investigation unfolds. The entire state grieves with their families, loved ones, and the National Guard community. West Virginia will never forget their service and sacrifice, and we demand full accountability for this horrific act.”
As of now, authorities have not disclosed the names of the victims or any suspects taken into custody.
In addition, a civilian caught in the shooting is reported to be in critical condition after being transported to a trauma center, according to Vito Maggiolo, a spokesperson for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
The shooting happened at the intersection of Northwest 17th Avenue and Eye Street, near Farragut West Metro station and just a few blocks from the White House, where a Guardsman reportedly engaged with the suspect before being shot.
A suspect, who sustained serious injuries during the incident, was also apprehended and taken from the scene on a stretcher.
While the White House lockdown has been lifted and a ground stop at Reagan National Airport is no longer in place, surrounding roads, including parts of Connecticut Avenue and K Street, remain closed as investigations continue. Officials assure the public that the area is currently secure, but they recommend avoiding it to facilitate responders’ access.
