Video has surfaced showing a man wielding a knife, attempting to flee after being shot multiple times by police.
On November 26, 2025, around 12:10 p.m., Escondido Police responded to reports of a man behaving erratically at the intersection of Center City Parkway and Felicita Avenue in Escondido, California.
According to police, 911 callers reported that a man had approached drivers with a knife.
The individual, identified as 54-year-old Juan Ramos, walked north in the oncoming lanes and eventually reached the intersection of 13th Street and Center City Parkway.
Footage from the scene shows officers surrounding Ramos with their weapons drawn, instructing him to drop the knife moments before he began to fire.
Despite receiving multiple gunshot wounds, Ramos attempted to rise and flee. Officers continued shooting until he collapsed and could no longer stand.
A bystander who witnessed the entire incident, wishing to remain anonymous, remarked, “It felt like something out of a movie. He was in the street pulling out a knife.” They added, “I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. Every time he got shot, he just kept getting up before they opened fire again.”
Ramos was transported to a hospital for surgery and is expected to survive.
He is set to face charges for assaulting a peace officer with a deadly weapon.
Following the shooting, San Diego police homicide detectives were dispatched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer’s use of force.
According to San Diego Police Department Lt. Chris Tibanian, “The man disregarded the officers’ commands and moved toward the detectives holding a knife, prompting all three officers to discharge their weapons.” He continued, “The man fell but quickly got back up and charged at the uniformed officers with the knife, leading to another round of shots being fired.”
Lt. Tibanian also noted that during the confrontation, Ramos expressed a desire for the officers to shoot him.
Investigations into officer-involved shootings are extensive, with a thorough vetting process in place.
Once the Homicide investigation wraps up, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will evaluate whether the officers will face any criminal charges.
The Escondido Police Department will conduct its own administrative review regarding the officer’s use of their firearm.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are also involved in overseeing the investigation.
