Weather Forecast for Thanksgiving Weekend

This Thanksgiving weekend, travelers should prepare for a mix of snow, rain, and cold temperatures. Winter storm warnings are in effect across northern regions, with significant snowfall anticipated in the Great Lakes area.

According to the National Weather Service, storm warnings stretch from Montana all the way to New York.

Snow is forecasted to begin on Friday and continue through the weekend in various locations, with Iowa and Illinois expected to face the heaviest impacts.

Many areas in central Illinois may see between 6 inches and a foot of snow from Friday night into Saturday night.

Meteorologists have indicated that current conditions don’t warrant a blizzard warning, as the criteria—high winds, low visibility, and extended blizzard-like conditions—aren’t fully met.

This storm, which has already affected parts of the Northern Plains and the Great Lakes region, continued to bring snow on Friday.

By the end of the storm, forecasts suggest that regions near Lake Superior and Lakes Erie and Ontario in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula could receive over a foot of snow. Central New York might see similar totals.

A snow squall is anticipated for Friday, potentially leading to heavy snowfall and hazardous driving conditions due to whiteout scenarios in the interior Northeast.

In the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountains, a combination of snow and rain is expected on Friday. By Saturday, the snow should diminish in the Rockies and northern Plains, but it may linger in the Midwest.

Severe storms are predicted in the South, with possible flash flooding in the western Gulf Coast region on Saturday.

Temperatures in the eastern and central U.S. will be notably below average, with highs ranging from the 20s to 30s Fahrenheit in the Midwest, and 30s to 40s in New England and the Mid-Atlantic. The Southeast could see temperatures in the 40s to 50s.

This wintry weather resulted in numerous vehicle accidents across western Michigan during Thanksgiving.
