Former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz from Florida stated on Friday that President Donald Trump bears some responsibility for the deaths of National Guard members. She referenced claims made earlier by commentators who alleged that National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom and Sergeant Beckstrom were killed in an ambush. This incident, according to Schultz, stemmed from Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in American cities.
During a CNN interview amidst the fallout from the shooting, Schultz posed a critical question: “Would anyone have traveled across the country to target law enforcement in Washington, D.C.?” She suggested the probable answer was no, urging that perhaps the president should have thought twice about sending troops into urban areas, especially without strong collaboration with local leaders and law enforcement capabilities. “Our focus should be on law enforcement, not military,” she remarked.
Trump defended his actions, explaining that he initiated federal intervention because local law enforcement couldn’t effectively address rising crime rates in major cities. Even Washington, D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser eventually conceded that increased federal funding had helped significantly reduce issues like carjacking in D.C.
Following the shooting, which involved an Afghan national, Trump emphasized the need to limit immigration from certain countries and suggested a “reverse migration” policy. Sarah Sydner from CNN pointed out that just prior to the shooting, it had come to light that the Trump administration was planning to review refugees who entered during the Biden administration.
Wasserman Schultz expressed concern regarding any administration making broad claims. “If there were any gaps in recognizing this individual, he would have navigated several systems and still managed to be trusted to support our troops in Afghanistan,” she commented.
Schultz argued that Trump needed to look inward regarding the risks posed to the National Guard. “It’s important we don’t rely on military for law enforcement roles,” she said, emphasizing the necessity for stringent vetting processes while condemning the president for shifting blame onto others instead of acknowledging his policies.
The White House responded strongly, with Press Secretary Abigail Jackson claiming that the shooter would not have been in the country had it not been for Biden’s immigration policies. She accused Democrats of failing to assist in keeping Americans safe. “Instead of defending terrorists, they should work with us to protect the American people,” Jackson argued.
