Giants’ Kick Misfire Leaves Iconic Players in Shock
For two former star quarterbacks with a combined 33 years in the NFL, it takes a lot to surprise them on the football field.
Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and even actor Danny DeVito shared a collective gasp as they watched Younghoe Koo miss a field goal attempt during the Giants’ 33-15 defeat to the Patriots on Monday Night Football.
In a surprising blunder, Koo kicked the ground instead of the ball in the second quarter, prompting a strong response during ESPN’s “Manning Cast.”
“The kicker stumbled trying to kick a field goal,” Peyton remarked as the score stood at 17-7 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.
“I’ve never seen anything like that…” he added, reflecting the disbelief in the moment.
DeVito chimed in, repeating, “I’ve never seen anything like that,” emphasizing just how unusual the mishap was.
Eli joined the chorus with his own series of “umm”s, while replays revealed Koo had driven his foot into the grass just inches away from the ball, leading to a scramble from punter Jamie Gillan to recover the situation before being tackled and turning the ball over.
Peyton humorously noted, “Eli, that’s like a fat 9-iron you hit. It’s all grass.”
Again, Eli echoed, “I’ve never seen anything like that,” capturing the surreal nature of the play.
ESPN’s cameras caught Giants quarterback Jackson Dart rolling his eyes and seemingly exclaiming, “Oh my God,” as he turned away from what appeared to be another chaotic moment for the team.
“Oh my God,” DeVito reacted, but Peyton quickly replied, “That’s what Dart said. Same thing, Danny.” It was a night full of surprises, for sure.
The kick mishap added to a troubling season for the Giants’ special teams, marked by errors. Kicker Graham Gano faced health issues, sustaining his second injury in as many years during warmups in Week 3. Backup kicker Jude McAtamny had his own issues, missing a crucial kick during a game in Denver, and now Koo’s debacle would be another entry in the long list of challenges for the team’s kicking unit.
The Giants also allowed a 94-yard punt return, adding to the series of missteps for their notoriously struggling special teams.
From the botched kick to Abdul-Carter being benched again, it was an undeniably embarrassing night for the franchise on the national stage.
