Support for Newsom’s Presidential Ambitions Grows
Wealthy figures in Hollywood are increasingly backing California Governor Gavin Newsom’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, as indicated by recent reports.
A long-time donor, who asked to remain anonymous, praised Newsom, saying, “He’s a fighter, that’s what we need!” They also expressed a desire for more Democratic leaders to adopt a more assertive approach, similar to that of former President Trump, rather than merely trying to imitate him.
Democratic Party official James Kostos shared with Deadline, “The enthusiasm from L.A. donors is really strong and quite encouraging. They’re contributing significant amounts to Democratic causes.” He noted that, after a slow initial recovery from the previous November’s defeat, there’s been a shift in momentum driven by various events and legal victories, which are helping to galvanize efforts for upcoming elections.
Another donor mentioned that many influential supporters are eager to get onboard with Newsom’s campaign early. “Everyone wants to find someone who can win,” commented Democratic political consultant Matthew Littman.
Activist and political strategist Donna Bojalski highlighted that Newsom is in tune with the sentiments of left-leaning voters, particularly through his critiques of Trump and his push for gerrymandering measures like Prop. 50.
Yet, while Newsom is known for criticizing Trump, the former president won’t appear on the 2028 ballot. This raises questions about whether Newsom can effectively channel his strong opposition into a competitive stance against the top Republican candidate later.
