Israel Set to Reopen Gaza’s Rafah Crossing in Important Test for Trump Peace Plan

Israel to Reopen Rafah Border with Egypt

Israel is set to reopen the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, according to a report by the Associated Press. This comes as Israeli officials have received bodies believed to belong to hostages taken during the October 7 terrorist attack.

These remains could potentially be the last of the deceased hostages, awaiting forensic examination, while Israel and Hamas continue to gradually enact the terms of President Donald Trump’s peace proposal. To date, Hamas has released all of its living hostages, yet intermittent clashes with Israeli forces raise doubts about its willingness to disarm.

For anyone wishing to exit Gaza, approval from Israel is required, as reported by the Associated Press.

Palestinians returning to Gaza will only gain access to the reopened crossings if all hostages or bodies are returned, Israeli officials have stated. So far, the border has remained open solely for Gazans requiring urgent medical care during the ongoing conflict.

Trump’s peace plan proposes the establishment of an international governing body for Gaza, led by Palestinian technocrats and supported by troops from neighboring Arab states. The United Nations gave its formal endorsement to this plan last November, intensifying pressure on Hamas to adhere to its stipulations.

Moreover, the Arab League publicly urged Hamas to disarm through a joint resolution issued in July.

Residents of Gaza are apprehensive that Hamas may not fully commit to the peace plan. After agreeing to the proposal in October, the group began executing rivals and those it accused of betrayal shortly thereafter.

As of now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has yet to respond to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
