Sam Wiedenhofer, a 22-year-old influencer from Australia, embarked on a cross-country trip in the U.S. to promote kindness. During a stop at a Michigan supermarket, he encountered Ed Bambas, an 88-year-old Army veteran. What unfolded next—a heartfelt sharing of Bambas’s struggles—led to an astonishing wave of donations, now totaling over $1.7 million.
This encounter took place on November 25 at the Meijer grocery store in Brighton. Wiedenhofer, unaware of the depth of Bambas’s challenges, captured the senior’s emotional story on video, which quickly went viral. People rallied to support Bambas, especially after his transparent sharing of his difficult circumstances.
“Initially, I just knew he was an older man working at a grocery store,” Wiedenhofer recalled during a return trip to Detroit from Toronto. “I had no idea he was facing such hardship. I wanted to showcase how dedicated he was at his job.”
In the poignant video posted to Instagram, Bambas spoke about working full-time as a cashier to support himself after losing a pension and struggling with debt stemming from his wife’s medical expenses.
Wiedenhofer felt compelled to act. He launched a GoFundMe page on Monday, which astonishingly amassed more than $1.718 million by Friday morning.
“This is definitely a record,” Wiedenhofer commented, clearly moved by the overwhelming community support. “It’s surreal. People really seem to connect with Ed’s story and feel part of something significant.”
Wiedenhofer’s journey, prompted by his own familial loss, made him determined to spread kindness. He learned about Bambas from a follower’s comment and was motivated to meet him in person.
After connecting with Bambas, Wiedenhofer heard the senior’s backstory: he retired from General Motors in 1999, only to see his pension vanish after the company’s bankruptcy in 2012. His family had faced further strain when his wife became seriously ill.
The toll of these events forced Bambas to sell his home just to manage day-to-day expenses. “The worst part was watching my wife suffer while losing our safety net,” he shared, visibly emotional.
Since the passing of his wife Joanne seven years ago, he has had to return to the demanding 40-hour work week.
“At 88, he shouldn’t have to be working,” Wiedenhofer said, handing Bambas a $400 tip after their touching meeting. “His story resonates with so many; he feels like family to them. It’s beautiful that we’re able to share it.”
Wiedenhofer plans to surprise Bambas with a life-changing amount of money during a private celebration, but the veteran remains unaware of the scale of support he has received.
“I believe it will be monumental,” Wiedenhofer expressed, reflecting on the collective effort. “Helping individuals and making a meaningful impact is what drives me. I’m incredibly thankful for the community that enables us to make such a difference in lives like Ed’s.”
Once the money is distributed, the GoFundMe will be paused, allowing influencers to continue their mission of highlighting those in need.
