Kyler Murray's season ends as Cardinals face a $58 million decision

Kyler Murray’s Season Cut Short

Kyler Murray’s offseason has begun with a cloud of uncertainty. Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon updated the media on Friday, confirming that the team’s quarterback won’t return this season due to a foot injury he suffered during Week 5.

“He underwent additional testing and sought a second opinion outside of the state,” Gannon explained. “Unfortunately, he hasn’t made enough progress to justify a return.”

Murray twisted his foot during a close 22-21 loss to the Titans and wasn’t placed on injured reserve until Week 8. Over the season, he tallied 962 passing yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. Backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett will continue to take over for the remaining five games.

Currently, the Cardinals sit at the bottom of the NFC West, with a 3-9 record and no chance of making the playoffs. At this stage, they’re playing for pride.

Amidst all this, Murray’s future with the team remains in question. This season has been a real rollercoaster for him; amid his struggles, Brissett’s performance has brought up some interesting decisions for the franchise.

Looking ahead, Murray is set to make $36.8 million in guaranteed salary, with a hefty $19.5 million roster bonus due in March 2027. If cut before June 1, his release could potentially leave the team absorbing nearly $58 million in dead cap money.

At 28, Murray’s had his fair share of ups and downs. He’s at the center of various discussions, especially considering he’s led the team to just one winning season and a playoff berth back in 2021, when they finished 11-6.

He has a career record of 38 wins and 48 losses, passing for 20,460 yards with 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions, while also rushing for 3,193 yards and scoring 32 touchdowns over seven seasons.

As for Gannon, he’s focused on the upcoming game against the Rams and wasn’t ready to dive into discussions about Murray’s future. “Right now, my attention is on the Rams,” he stated.

Yet, Gannon did express some empathy for his quarterback, acknowledging the unfortunate situation. “I really feel for Kyler. He got injured and just hasn’t been able to play. That’s where my thoughts are at the moment,” he added.
