President Trump Attends FIFA World Cup Draw
FIFA President Gianni Infantino played a prominent role in the highly anticipated World Cup draw that took place in Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon.
Infantino shared the stage with President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This event brought together leaders from the sport’s governing bodies and the heads of the three host nations for next year’s World Cup.
During the event, Trump, described by Infantino as a “close friend,” received the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize about half an hour into the proceedings. FIFA had announced this new award in November, indicating plans to present it annually to individuals making significant contributions toward peace globally.
In the draw, a record 48 teams were organized into 12 groups of four. Yet, there remain six World Cup spots to be filled by March, when 22 teams will compete in playoffs. Canada and Mexico have already been assigned early matches, with Canada’s first game set for Toronto and Mexico’s in Mexico City, their most populous city.
The tournament will later shift to the United States for the semifinals, planned for Atlanta and Arlington, Texas. The finals are set to occur at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which is in the New York City area.
Several sports celebrities were present, including seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady, NHL icon Wayne Gretzky, and NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.
As for the tournament, Argentina, featuring Lionel Messi, will open against Algeria as they aim to defend their title, while the United States will prepare for their first match against Paraguay. This marks the return of soccer’s quadrennial championship to North America for the first time since 1994.
