‘Landman’ Stars Paulina Chávez & Jacob Lofland Discuss Ariana’s & Cooper’s Relationship: “He'll Follow Her Lead”

Landman Season 2: A Complicated Romance

One notable aspect of Landman Season 1 was the developing relationship between young oilman Cooper Norris and recently widowed Ariana Medina. As Season 2 unfolds, they find themselves living together, but things take a dramatic turn when some of Norris’s wells suddenly erupt with oil. This event forces Medina to confront her feelings, complicated by her ongoing grief for her late husband, Elvio. “My relationship with Cooper is very different than my relationship with Elvio,” Chavez shared. “It’s scary to allow yourself to fall in love.”

Chavez also highlights that Norris’s career in the oil industry is a source of tension for Medina. “She’s hesitant because he’s in the same field, and that world is terrifying for her.” Nevertheless, Norris shows patience, willing to give Medina space while not letting her push him away entirely. “He just wants to make her happy. That’s always been his main goal,” Loughran explained. “He fears rejection but respects her feelings and is ready to listen.”

When asked about the future of their relationship, both Chavez and Loughran remained somewhat vague. “We can only say it’s going to be very interesting,” Loughran teased, adding that they believe viewers will enjoy it. Chavez echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement to see audience reactions.

During a recent press junket, Chavez and Loughran discussed the dynamics between their characters. Loughran mentioned his enthusiasm about working with new cast members like Sam Elliott.

Interviewer: Jacob, you’re not only continuing to work with Billy Bob Thornton but also Sam Elliott. Is there a moment when you just think, “Wow, this is real”?

Jacob Lofland: Absolutely. I say that every time, honestly. It’s surreal to be in this situation. I feel incredibly lucky and grateful.

Interviewer: What does Sam Elliott bring to the cast dynamic?

JL: Sam is a legend with a huge heart, and his professionalism shines through every day. He’s truly passionate about his work, and it’s inspiring. Having both Sam and Billy Bob around makes this experience a dream come true.

Interviewer: Paulina, Cooper and Ariana’s relationship seems central to the series. Why does Ariana keep pushing Cooper away?

Paulina Chavez: There’s definitely fear in entering a relationship that’s so sincere. My connection with Cooper is different from what I had with Elvio. It’s intimidating to open your heart. Plus, the uncertainty of his job in the oil industry adds to her reluctance. It’s a tough reality to face, and I find that beautifully reflects life—you must learn to embrace what you deserve.

Interviewer: Jacob, why do you think Cooper hasn’t given up on Ariana?

JL: He genuinely wants her happiness above all else. If she needs space, he’ll provide it. He understands her reasons for wanting to keep distance. There’s a fear of rejection for him, but he really respects her decisions.

PC: And he’s willing to be patient. A good man will always do that.

Interviewer: What can you share about what’s ahead for your character this season?

JL: All I can say is, it’s going to be quite intriguing. [laughs] I believe people will love it, and I’m eager to see everyone’s reactions.

PC: We’re looking forward to it as well.

Interviewer: Jacob, it’s clear Cooper feels out of his depth with Garino. What can you say about his relationship with the Norris family in Season 2?

Cooper’s just beginning to figure things out, and the audience will be on that journey with him. It’s going to be an entertaining dynamic. At first, he’s under the impression he’s hit the jackpot, but he soon realizes it might not be as great as he thought. Now, he’s going to have to reassess and maybe reconsider his hasty decisions.
