Black man stabs white man, who then uses a racial slur after the attack, leading to an unexpected verdict from a Portland jury.

A black man recently acknowledged in court that he stabbed a white man during an incident last summer, but a jury in Portland cleared him of charges after discovering that the victim had used a racial slur.

Gary Edwards faced second-degree assault charges for allegedly attacking Gregory Howard Jr. with a knife on July 7 in Portland’s Old Town area. Reports indicate that if found guilty, Edwards could have faced a prison sentence of nearly six years.

During his testimony, Edwards claimed the stabbing was an act of self-defense, citing Howard’s aggressive behavior as the catalyst. Witnesses noted that as soon as Howard saw Edwards, he stood up and confronted him, leading to a brief struggle before Edwards stabbed him in the shoulder.

Defense attorney Daniel Small emphasized that the most critical evidence came from a security guard’s body camera footage, which captured Howard shouting racial slurs after the attack. Howard, however, denied using any slurs during the incident.

Small argued to the jury that Howard’s perception of aggression could only be explained by underlying prejudice. In contrast, Prosecutor Katherine Williams contended that Howard’s comments post-stabbing were irrelevant and insisted that Edwards maintained control throughout the situation. She noted that Edwards did not attempt to flee after the stabbing, which contradicts any claim of self-defense.

Despite the prosecution’s arguments, the jury acquitted Edwards of all charges.

Edwards had been detained for about three months before the trial due to previous criminal history, which included a conviction for attempted second-degree assault and other charges, while Howard also had a troubled legal background.

A recent Facebook post by the New York Post about the acquittal elicited over 1,000 remarks, showcasing a range of reactions, some critical and others satirical.
