Trump Calls for Resignation of Justices Alito and Thomas

President Donald Trump has suggested that Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas should resign, describing them as “excellent.” This week, he spoke to Politico, mentioning that some Republicans are hoping the two senior conservative justices might step down prior to the midterm elections. This scenario would permit Trump to nominate a conservative replacement, thereby securing a Republican majority in the Senate.

“I hope they stay,” Trump stated, “because I think they’re great.”

According to sources close to him, Alito, who is 75 years old, has no intention of retiring anytime soon. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President George W. Bush in 2006.

A source quoted by the Wall Street Journal mentioned that Alito has never perceived his role in political terms. The notion of stepping down for political reasons doesn’t align with his character, the source added.

Clarence Thomas, 77, was nominated to the court in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush. Meanwhile, Sonia Sotomayor, who was appointed by President Obama in 2009, is currently 71 years old.

In 2022, a faction of House Democrats pushed for Thomas to either resign or face impeachment, criticizing his failure to recuse himself from matters connected to the January 6 Capitol riot.

Interestingly, on January 6, it was reported that Thomas’s wife, Ginny, texted then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, advocating for the challenge to Trump’s 2020 election defeat.
