Zelensky Reaffirms Stance Against Giving Up Land in Donbas to Russia

Ukrainian President Zelensky Seeks Support Amidst Pressure for Concessions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took a firm stance on Tuesday, seeking additional support from European nations as he resisted U.S. demands for concessions to Russia. He reiterated that Ukraine would not give up any of its territory. “Without a doubt, Russia is asking us to give up territory. We obviously don’t want to give up anything. That’s what we’re fighting for,” he shared during a WhatsApp chat late Monday.

Zelensky emphasized the legal and moral imperatives against ceding land. “According to the law, we have no such right,” he explained, referring to Ukrainian and international laws. “Honestly, we have no moral rights either.” His remarks came amid ongoing discussions about territorial concessions, a point stressed by U.S. President Donald Trump in a Politico interview. Trump urged Zelensky to accept a U.S. proposal suggesting Ukraine relinquish territory to Russia, citing Russia’s advantages in its ongoing military campaign.

During a meeting with Pope Leo XIV and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Zelensky found a sympathetic ear. The Vatican, maintaining a neutral stance, has called for continued dialogue and expressed hope for a just and enduring peace. Leo has consistently advocated for a ceasefire, urging Moscow to engage in gestures that could foster peace.

In a significant diplomatic effort, Zelensky met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London, in response to increasing impatience from Trump. Over the weekend, U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators carried out talks to address the differences surrounding the peace proposal, which primarily revolves around the contentious issue of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, largely under Russian occupation.

“As you know, a lot of people are dying,” Trump stated, insisting that some Ukrainian officials were in agreement with the administration’s position. Yet, the specifics of the U.S. proposal and Ukraine’s perspective on it have remained largely unspoken in public discourse.

Trump highlighted Russia’s perceived strength, suggesting it was diminishing Ukraine’s chances for continued resistance. “I have great respect for the courage and achievements of the Ukrainian people,” he remarked. However, he indicated that, in a broader context, size often prevails in conflicts.

Trump also mentioned the necessity for Ukraine to hold presidential elections, despite the ongoing martial law framework that currently disallows them. This stance somewhat mirrored President Putin’s frequent comments regarding elections in Ukraine. Since his re-election, Trump’s relationship with Zelensky has been strained, as he voiced concerns about U.S. financial support for Ukraine.

Zelensky remarked on Trump’s desire for peace, recognizing that while the U.S. leader has his own vision, the nuances of the situation are deeply felt by those living within Ukraine. He noted that some anti-Ukrainian elements had been removed from the revised U.S. peace proposal, which had seen its complexity reduced.

Meanwhile, President Putin reaffirmed Russia’s claims to Donbass during a meeting with pro-Kremlin activists, insisting that the war objectives set by the Kremlin would be achieved. European leaders, in response to escalating tensions, have emphasized the need for a strong security backing for any potential ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

While diplomatic efforts unfold, Ukraine continues to face assaults from Russian forces. On Monday night, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 110 drones against various targets, with 24 hitting their marks despite the neutralization of many others by air defense systems. These attacks inflicted emergency power outages due to strikes on energy infrastructure.

Conversely, Ukraine conducted its own drone strikes against Russia, targeting a liquefied gas terminal. The operation reportedly resulted in a significant fire and extensive damage to storage facilities, further illustrating the ongoing conflict’s escalation.
