Judges in Mecklenburg County Facing Intimidation After Recent Murders

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden announced on Tuesday that judges in the area are feeling threatened following the recent killings of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and Ukrainian refugee Irina Zalutka. McFadden noted that magistrates are, quite understandably, fearful given the circumstances surrounding Kirk’s assassination in Utah on September 10.

In his remarks, McFadden expressed concern that magistrates felt “attacked” and uncertain about their safety after these tragic events. The sheriff emphasized that violent rhetoric on social media has only heightened their fears. He remarked, “They lived in fear for days after the news broke. The nature of social media violence contributes to this atmosphere, leading us to take additional measures to ensure their protection.” McFadden also mentioned that the distress experienced by these magistrates was profound, leading conversations about safety and how to navigate their roles amidst such glaring threats.

Judges may now think twice before releasing offenders, largely due to the intimidation stemming from these incidents. McFadden cited a new legislative measure called Irina’s Law, named after Zalutka, who was tragically murdered on a light rail train in Charlotte.

He explained, “Judges are likely going to be more cautious and hesitant to release individuals considering recent events,” referencing the case of DeCarlos Brown Jr. This man, a homeless individual with a mental illness and a substantial criminal record, was charged with stabbing Zalutka. Despite his history, Magistrate Teresa Stokes released him in January on a promise to appear in court later.

Starting December 1, a newly passed law will mandate that anyone convicted of a first-degree misdemeanor or worse three times within the last decade faces a prison or house arrest sentence. Additionally, it will require mental health evaluations for defendants with recent involuntary crimes or those considered a community risk. Crucially, the law will also prevent judges from releasing defendants based on a mere written promise to return to court.

In a broader context connected to these violent incidents, Kirk was fatally shot by Tyler Robinson, the alleged assailant. Kirk’s parents reported a shift in their son’s views, noting he had become more vocal about issues related to gay and transgender rights in recent times.
