Incident In Nebraska Involving Undocumented Immigrant
Federal authorities have shared a photo of an undocumented immigrant in Nebraska who was charged last Wednesday following an unprovoked attack that seriously injured a 61-year-old man and also harmed four police officers.
According to Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin, on December 3, a violent criminal from El Salvador, who was illegally in the United States, fatally shot a 61-year-old man along with four police officers in Omaha. McLaughlin noted that despite having multiple prior arrests, the individual had managed to remain elusive within American society.
The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Juan Ayala Ramos, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday.
Ramos had entered the U.S. illegally as an unaccompanied minor in June 2007, at approximately 10 years old. An immigration judge later closed his deportation case without making a final verdict, according to DHS.
Over the years, Ramos faced criminal charges, including assault by strangulation in 2019 and arrests for robbery and possession of a stolen firearm in 2021. A local news outlet reported that he didn’t appeal theft charges linked to business break-ins occurring in 2021 and also pleaded guilty to several traffic-related offenses involving driving without a valid license or insurance.
On December 3, as authorities recounted, Ramos allegedly shot at 61-year-old Michael Kasper outside a Phil’s Foodway grocery store. Kasper was reportedly loading groceries into his vehicle when Ramos, having exited his own car, began firing. Kasper was hospitalized in critical condition but was expected to survive, according to Omaha police. The reason behind the attack and any connection between Ramos and the victim remain unclear.
When officers responded to the scene, they tracked Ramos’ vehicle to a QuikTrip gas station. Body camera footage displayed him emerging from a bathroom stall, subsequently firing at the officers. The officers then returned fire, hitting and killing Ramos. Four of the six responding officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the incident.
McLaughlin expressed condolences to Michael Kasper, who remains in critical condition, and to the officers involved in this tragic event. She also commended the Omaha Police Department for their brave actions in neutralizing the situation.
