Trump aims military action at Venezuela's drug trafficking system.

The Threat of Venezuela to U.S. Security

The situation in Venezuela presents a significant threat to the security and well-being of the United States. After two decades of socialist policies, this once-prosperous nation now experiences rampant instability and crime affecting the broader Western Hemisphere. With four years of what can be seen as appeasement under President Biden, the urgency of addressing this issue cannot be overlooked any longer.

President Trump has made it clear to the Maduro regime that they can no longer act with impunity, which is a necessary message. He’s issued a warning to drug traffickers everywhere. It’s important to emphasize—Venezuelan narco-terrorists and their operations pose a serious risk to the American populace. Trump has both the right and the obligation to utilize military force to halt these threats.

This approach mirrors the tough stance I championed while serving as Secretary of State during Trump’s first term. We understood the profound danger posed by a drug-trafficking dictatorship like Venezuela, which collaborates with nations hostile to the U.S., including Iran, Cuba, China, and Russia. Our commitment to safeguarding American interests is unwavering.

Our strategy included isolating Nicolás Maduro and financially crippling Venezuela by drastically reducing oil exports, which account for a significant portion of its income—by around 70% in just a few years. The Trump administration has also pursued legal action against Maduro and his associates, charging them with narcoterrorism and drug trafficking, while intensifying counternarcotics efforts targeting pathways from Venezuela.

We have also consistently supported Venezuela’s democratic opposition. Following Maduro’s unjust takeover during the 2019 elections, we boldly recognized Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president, urging other nations to do the same.

However, the policies implemented by the Biden administration led to a drastic change. American deterrence has weakened, with sanctions being eased or lifted, effectively granting Maduro a lifeline. This emboldenment could pave the way for him to manipulate elections again in 2024. Furthermore, Alex Saab, who has been linked to illicit transactions involving gold and weapons between Venezuela and Iran, was released by the Biden administration in a questionable act that benefited the Maduro regime politically.

The ongoing collapse of Venezuela’s economy, combined with Biden’s lenient border policies, has resulted in a surge of Venezuelan migrants arriving in the U.S., some affiliated with notorious gangs. Maduro has exploited this migration to negotiate concessions with the U.S. while maintaining his authority.

Fortunately, it seems President Trump is beginning to redirect the course. The new administration has initiated targeted actions against drug traffickers and ramped up military presence in the Caribbean. They’ve also reversed oil concessions granted during Biden’s time, placed secondary tariffs on countries sourcing oil from Venezuela, and increased rewards for information leading to Maduro’s arrest, all while addressing threats from the gang Torren de Aragua. As this strategy develops, a few guiding principles should be established.

First, we must categorically state that Maduro’s regime lacks legitimacy and support the democratic movement led by Maria Colina Machado. Maduro has stolen elections—multiple times—showing no true governance from the people’s will. Admittedly, achieving authentic democratic reforms in Venezuela is daunting, but it is necessary for the country’s long-term stability and prosperity.

It’s crucial to acknowledge that the Maduro regime offers no grounds for compromise. Their actions undermine American interests by creating instability in the region and perpetuating transnational crime. Therefore, our strategy must leverage all possible pressure points, including sanctions and necessary campaign initiatives, to hinder the Venezuelan government’s operations.

Lastly, it’s essential to realize that global adversaries wish for the U.S. to withdraw from Latin America. Venezuela’s ongoing decline affects even its closest allies like China and Russia, yet any stabilization of Maduro’s regime could rekindle the presence of these threats near U.S. borders.

As Trump’s national security strategy suggests, it’s crucial to reinforce the Monroe Doctrine, protecting U.S. interests in the Western Hemisphere and preventing adversaries from gaining a foothold in the Americas.

The deterioration of Venezuela exemplifies the inevitable outcomes of socialism: autocracy, economic failure, and escalating disorder. The longer Maduro stays in power, the more bleak the future will be for Venezuelans and their neighbors throughout Latin America. Our strategy should reflect this understanding, ensuring we employ all available means to advance U.S. interests.
