Premature Celebration Costs Team Championship
The high school football championship in Louisiana ended in an unexpected twist Friday night. Archbishop Shaw High School inadvertently surrendered the LHSAA Division II selection state title to St. Charles Catholic due to a premature celebration.
The game took place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, and it seemed Shaw had clinched the victory with just 35 seconds left on the clock after recovering an onside kick, leading 21-20.
However, rather than taking a knee to seal the win, chaos ensued when a Shaw player removed his helmet during the celebration, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Under Louisiana high school regulations, such a penalty paused the clock, preventing it from running out completely. Consequently, Shaw had to punt on extra downs instead of letting the time wind down.
The punt went awry, giving St. Charles an unexpected advantage in field position with mere seconds left in the game.
With time running out, senior kicker Tyler Milioto scored a 44-yard field goal, turning the final score to 23-21 and granting the Comets an astonishing championship victory.
This defeat was particularly tough for Shaw, especially since St. Charles had previously missed an extra point that could have tied the game early on.
Amid the chaos, Milioto reflected on his emotions, saying, “I felt like I lost the game, and the next thing I knew, I was kicking the game-winning field goal,” highlighting the unexpected nature of the victory.
The win marked St. Charles’ fourth state title, adding to their impressive history.
