Iowa Soldier Killed in Syrian Terror Attack Identified

One of the two Iowa Army National Guard members who lost their lives in a terrorist ambush in Syria has been identified as Nate Howard, the son of Meskwaki Police Chief Jeffrey Bunn. Chief Bunn confirmed the tragic news on Facebook, expressing the profound pain of losing his son.

The attack, executed by an Islamic State gunman in Palmyra, resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers, along with a civilian interpreter. Three additional soldiers were injured in the ambush.

“Today, two Iowa Army National Guard members were killed in action in Syria,” Bunn shared. “My wife Misty and I never anticipated receiving such a visit from an Army commander. Our son, Nate, was one of those brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. He deeply loved his work, always putting others first. Please pray for all our servicemen and women in these challenging times.”

Nate Howard’s Legacy

Nate Howard, originally from Marshalltown, had dedicated over 11 years to the Iowa Army National Guard, aiming to fulfill a 20-year commitment. His military journey was inspired by his grandfather, making him the first in his paternal family to serve. Outside of his military role, Howard worked as a laser engraving specialist and enjoyed hobbies like woodworking, gaming, and shooting.

Tama County Sheriff Casey Schmidt expressed his condolences to Howard’s family, describing him as “the son who never came home.” In his statement, Schmidt mentioned the personal nature of such losses, stressing the real costs of service, particularly when facing groups like ISIS.

“This tragedy hits home,” Schmidt said. “It’s a critical reminder of the sacrifices made by our military, affecting families and communities profoundly.” He expressed his admiration for the brave service members, acknowledging the risks they take daily.

Moreover, the State Center Police Department and the Salute to the Fallen Foundation extended their heartfelt condolences, offering support to Howard’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Fox News Digital has reached out for further information regarding the incident, emphasizing the need to recognize the sacrifices made by those who serve.
