Diego Pavia Speaks Out After Heisman Snub

Diego Pavia, the quarterback for Vanderbilt University, has made it clear that he wants to address those who doubted his chances of winning the Heisman Trophy.

After Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza was awarded the prestigious honor, Pavia sent out a message to all voters. He expressed his feelings about coming so close to a dream he had worked hard for. On social media, he remarked on the Heisman Ceremony, saying, “It was such an honor to spend the night as a finalist. As a competitor, I always want to win. It’s frustrating to be so close yet not quite there. I struggled with those emotions and didn’t express myself perfectly. I truly respect the Heisman voters and the selection process, but I apologize if I was misunderstood.”

Pavia’s comments were directed at three distinct groups involved in the voting: the sports media, previous Heisman winners, and fans, who collectively contributed only one vote.

In the Heisman voting, Pavia finished in second place, receiving 189 first-place votes compared to Mendoza’s 643.

As per ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Mendoza is currently considered the No. 2 prospect for the 2026 NFL Draft, closely trailing Oregon’s Dante Moore, and is expected to make a declaration soon.

On the other hand, Pavia, despite having a solid season with the Commodores, is not seen as a top draft pick. He is expected to enter the 2026 NFL Draft, though he isn’t currently listed among Kiper’s top ten quarterbacks.

Pavia expressed admiration for Mendoza, stating, “Fernando Mendoza is an elite competitor and truly deserving of this award. I respect his achievements, as well as those of Jeremiah and Julian Sayin this season.” He shared that he has faced doubt throughout his life, emphasizing that he has always had to work hard and fight for his place. He acknowledged the unwavering support from his family, teammates, coaches, and staff, expressing his eagerness to continue competing in front of them.

This season, Pavia made a significant impact, throwing for 3,192 yards with 27 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while also contributing nine rushing touchdowns. His efforts have brought new attention to the Commodores, who have exceeded expectations this year.
