Tragic Death of Former Sports Reporter
A well-known sports journalist who transitioned to teaching was discovered dead in her Alabama home, alongside her husband, in what appears to be a suspected suicide. Their 3-year-old son was also present but unharmed.
Christina Chambers, previously a reporter for WBRC6, and her husband Johnny Rimes were found at her parents’ residence in Hoover, Alabama, shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Authorities confirmed the discovery.
Although the couple unfortunately lost their lives, their son was reported to be safe. Local law enforcement is currently examining the case, considering both homicide and suicide, as both individuals had suffered gunshot wounds.
Chambers was highly regarded in the community, having worked as a journalism teacher at Thompson High School. She was honored with the Alabama Scholastic Press Association Advisor of the Year Award in 2024.
In a statement from Alabaster City Schools, Chambers’ contributions were praised, particularly noting her ability to connect with students and enhance the school’s broadcast program significantly.
During her time at Thompson High, she played a key role in earning the Journalism Sustainability Award, and she mentored students who achieved the title of Alabama Journalist of the Year. Her team also excelled in various state championship events.
The superintendent of Alabaster City Schools, Dr. Wayne Vickers, expressed that Christina’s extensive knowledge and passion for sports reporting left a lasting impact on students and the community. “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragic loss,” he remarked.
Chambers became a familiar face on WBRC 6 in 2015, particularly known for the “Sideline” segment which focused on local sports. She didn’t just report; she also participated in the marathons she covered.
In 2021, she shifted to full-time teaching but continued to collaborate with WBRC 6 as a freelance reporter during the recent football season.
Before WBRC, she worked at WLTZ NBC38 in Columbus, Georgia, and Comcast Sports Southeast in Atlanta, where she reported on Auburn University sports and remained a loyal supporter even after moving on.
Her dedication to her studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham was evident. In her last Facebook post, she celebrated a significant victory for the Blazers.
Chambers had been on UAB’s Division 1 track and field team for four years and graduated with a journalism degree in 2011. She was also an avid marathon runner, having completed the Boston Marathon three times and planning to participate in her fourth by 2026.
