In the hours leading up to the tragic murder of his parents, Nick Reiner was spotted walking calmly near a gas station close to their Brentwood home. Surveillance footage shows the 32-year-old screenwriter dressed in casual jeans and a long-sleeved jacket, carrying a backpack on his left shoulder.
He was seen heading toward the residence of Rob and Michelle Reiner just before midnight on Saturday. The gas station is only a few blocks away from where the couple, known for directing “The Princess Bride,” lived.
This sighting occurred shortly before the couple was found stabbed to death early Sunday morning, according to the district attorney in Los Angeles County. Sources shared details with the media that Nick had argued with his parents at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien the same day.
A family friend mentioned that Rob had expressed concerns about Nick’s mental state, feeling frightened and believing his son was struggling with significant issues. Reports indicate that Nick might have been battling a serious addiction to opiates and heroin along with a history of violent behavior.
There was also an uncomfortable encounter at the party with comedian Bill Hader, during which Nick reportedly interrupted their conversation, prompting an awkward exchange before he allegedly became aggressive.
On Sunday afternoon, Rob and Michelle were found dead in their home, with their daughter Romy’s body also discovered nearby. Nick was arrested later that night at a subway station in downtown Los Angeles, and dramatic arrest footage became widely circulated.
Rob was 78, and Michelle was 70. They had two children, including adopted daughter Tracy, alongside their biological son, Jack, aged 34. At the crime scene, Romy reportedly indicated that Nick could be a suspect.
Currently, Nick is being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility after being moved from another prison. He is reportedly on suicide watch. He is facing serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, along with the potential for the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole.
District Attorney Nathan Hockman announced at a news conference that these charges reflect the gravity of the situation, especially given the use of a deadly weapon. Authorities will also take the family’s preferences into account as they navigate this case.
