Archaeologists in Israel discover gold coins at a monastery in the Judean Desert

Ancient Gold Discovered in Judean Desert

Israeli archaeologists recently made a fascinating find: they uncovered ancient gold artifacts at a site where a Christian monastery once stood in the Judean Desert. This discovery was announced this month by the Coordinator of Territorial Government Activities in Israel.

The treasure, which includes two gold coins and a delicate gold ring, was found in the Hyrcanian ruins, located about ten miles east of Jerusalem. It’s quite remarkable, considering that this site had been vulnerable to looting over the years; somehow, these artifacts managed to survive intact for around 1,400 years.

The ruins date back to the late Hellenistic period, around the 2nd to 1st centuries BC, initially serving as a fortress. The coins are particularly noteworthy; they depict Emperor Heraclius, who ruled from 610 to 641 AD.

According to COGAT, this discovery sheds light on the Christian presence in the region during the Byzantine period. The agency noted that during this time, as monasteries flourished in the Judean Desert, this monastery was established through the efforts of St. Sabas, a significant figure in desert monasticism, and it thrived for several centuries.

Archaeologist Binyamin Hareven remarked that the artifacts reflect a vital chapter in Byzantine history and highlight early Christian traditions in the area. He emphasized that preserving and studying such historical sites is crucial for understanding the rich heritage that has existed here for generations.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only significant discovery in the Judean Desert this year. Earlier, archaeologists stumbled upon a 2,200-year-old pyramid-shaped structure made of massive, hand-carved stones, each weighing several hundred pounds. It’s amazing how much history still lies beneath the surface, waiting to be revealed.
