Michael Porter Jr. Advances Toward All-Star Recognition

Michael Porter Jr. has been on a roll this season, yet he still hasn’t been able to attend his first All-Star Game. Fans finally had the chance to cast their votes on Monday, highlighting just how long this process has taken.

In the Eastern Conference, Porter secured 150,370 votes, placing him 10th as five starters were selected from each conference.

The forward played in a recent game against Golden State, averaging 25.7 points and 7.3 rebounds, although the Nets lost 120-107. Interestingly, he remains the only player in the East and one of just five across the entire league to average 25 points and seven rebounds. This is quite a change for him, shifting from being a supporting player on a championship Nuggets team to taking the lead on a Nets squad that is still finding its footing.

In that game, his performance improved, as he finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

“Mike leads by example. Since I met him at 19, he’s always been professional and dedicated to his training,” said Nets coach Jordi Fernandez. “He puts in the work, and that translates into his shot-making ability, be it open or contested.” It’s a kind of effort that often goes unnoticed, yet it certainly doesn’t escape his teammates.

“He brings positive energy. You can tell that everyone appreciates his attitude around the facility. You don’t need grand speeches; that smile says a lot. He exemplifies what it means to be a true professional, transitioning from a champion to a key player in a different situation,” Fernandez added.

This season, Porter is set to earn $38 million, with a projected $40 million next season. Come July, he’s in line for a contract extension that could reach up to four years and $243 million. The question for the Nets is whether they’ll build the team around him or explore trade options.

In other news, Giare Williams has been ruled out with a possible right ankle sprain. Meanwhile, Chris DeMarco, the Liberty’s new coach, is getting settled in after winning four NBA championships as an assistant with the Warriors.

“Visiting his new office today was surreal. It’s a whirlwind for him, coming to the new arena and then diving straight into coaching. He’s a remarkable asset, and I know he’ll be missed,” remarked Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “He’s always been dedicated to watching the game closely, whether it’s FIBA or European leagues. He has a passion for basketball, and while he’s certainly smart, he doesn’t need to be the smartest in the room. His experience will undoubtedly contribute a lot to the team.”
