Netanyahu on Gaza Governance and Hamas
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that a new governing body in the Gaza Strip could emerge within a year if the militant group Hamas disarms and ceases to exist.
“If Hamas continues to arm itself, then no one will step in, and they’ll likely face dire consequences,” Netanyahu said during an interview on Fox News’ “Special Report,” which is set to air on Tuesday night.
He further explained to host Bret Baier, “I think everybody sees this. I believe Hamas recognizes the reality too. That’s why they are unwilling to disarm. The goal isn’t to negotiate with them; it’s about their total disbandment.”
He emphasized, “And you know who desires this change more than anyone? The people of Gaza.”
The role of Hamas is a significant hurdle in moving forward with the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan, which Netanyahu discussed with President Trump during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago on Monday.
In this meeting, the leaders decided to grant Hamas two additional months for disarmament, as reported by Israel Hayom.
The subsequent phase of the ceasefire plan also includes the creation of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to oversee peace efforts in Palestinian areas.
Israel and Hamas entered the initial phase of the ceasefire plan in October, agreeing to halt hostilities to facilitate the release of Israeli hostages and to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
In another part of their discussion, Trump’s team urged Netanyahu to reduce recent restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank, according to Axios.
After their meeting, Trump remarked, “We’ve had extensive discussions about the West Bank. I won’t claim to fully agree on everything, but I aim to reach a conclusion about it soon.” He also expressed confidence in Netanyahu’s decisions, stating, “I know he’ll make the right choices.”
