Tragic Loss for Catholic Influencer

A Catholic influencer shared the heartbreaking news on Thursday about the death of his 5-year-old son, who passed away after an intense 11-day struggle with a severe flu. This painful journey was shared through near-daily updates on social media.

Paul J. Kim, who has a substantial following of over 300,000 on Instagram, revealed that his son Micah died on New Year’s Eve. In an emotional video, Kim expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he received, while requesting privacy for his family as they navigate their grief.

“We are incredibly proud of him,” he said in the video. “As his father, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your prayers and support during this tough time. This is, without a doubt, the hardest thing I’ve ever faced.”

Keen to provide transparency, Kim initially announced Micah’s illness on December 21, indicating that his son had suffered a medical emergency which required an ambulance to the hospital.

As updates continued, Kim informed his followers that doctors had described Micah’s case as an exceptionally severe flu. Unfortunately, the situation took a turn for the worse, leading to life support and a plea from Kim for prayers.

In a later update, he shared that the flu led to sepsis and a seizure, with medical professionals labeling the case as rare and extremely critical. On December 30, Kim reported that Micah was in a coma, urging everyone to cherish their loved ones.

Kim’s posts, which included a photo of Micah in the hospital, garnered millions of views as the family faced this heart-wrenching ordeal. Throughout it all, he referred to his son as a fighter and his “hero.”

In a written post on Instagram, he quoted Job 1:21, saying, “The Lord gave, and the Lord took away. Blessed be the name of the Lord,” while mentioning that Micah had entered into “God’s never-ending glory, love, and peace.” He acknowledged the devastation of their loss but emphasized the family’s reliance on their faith.

Additionally, Kim encouraged others to pray for their families and to learn, he added, “how to live by faith, not sight.”

Recent CDC data noted a record 288 childhood influenza deaths for the 2024-2025 season, highlighting the severe impact of this virus, particularly among unvaccinated children with underlying health issues. A new variant of the flu called subclade K has also emerged, known for its high contagion rates and aggressive nature.

This situation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccinations, especially for vulnerable populations. While Kim has not yet responded to requests for further comment, his poignant story resonates deeply in the wake of this tragedy.
