Hollywood Director James Burroughs Passes Away at 85
James Burroughs, a cherished figure in Hollywood, passed away on Friday at the age of 85. His family confirmed this sad news in a statement to People magazine.
In their announcement, they noted that he “passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family,” celebrating his “extraordinary life and enduring legacy.” The family reflected on his more than 50 years as a significant and beloved director in television, stating, “As a legendary director, mentor, and creative force, he helped shape comedy for generations and brought immense joy to audiences around the world.”
His career was described as “unparalleled,” with the family mentioning that he directed over 1,000 television episodes and contributed to some of the most iconic series ever made.
Burroughs, often called the “King of Sitcoms,” got his start directing an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and quickly became a prominent director for “Taxi,” where he won his first two Emmy Awards.
He went on to co-create the beloved series “Cheers,” directing nearly all but 35 of its 275 episodes, winning six Emmy Awards in the process. “But beyond his remarkable accomplishments, Burrows will be remembered for something even greater: his kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith in those around him,” the family said, highlighting his rare ability to make everyone feel valued.
Burrows directed the pilot of “Friends,” every episode of “Will & Grace,” and worked on numerous other sitcoms like “Two and a Half Men” and “Frasier.” His family expressed that “Mr. Burroughs understood that great comedy was never just about laughs; it was about humanity, connection, and truth.” They noted that his legacy would be felt for generations through the many artists he inspired.
Survived by his wife Debbie, four daughters, and seven grandchildren, Burrows was remembered fondly. The family shared their thoughts, “He will be deeply missed and forever remembered…” They expressed their sorrow and support for Debbie and the family during this challenging time.
Over his illustrious career, Burrows won 11 Emmy Awards and five Directors Guild Awards, gaining induction into the Television Hall of Fame in 2006. Following his passing, actors like Jennifer Aniston and Debra Messing shared heartfelt tributes on social media, reflecting on the profound effect he had on their lives.
Messing posted a series of photos and expressed her sorrow, noting, “Words can’t describe the pain of losing him.” She shared how he had impacted her life for nearly three decades. “He was like a father figure to me,” she added, speaking of the support and love he showed.
Burrows is not only remembered as a groundbreaking director but also as a mentor and a friend to many in the industry, leaving a mark that will always be cherished.
