Off-Duty ICE Officer Involved in Shooting Incident in Los Angeles

An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot a neighbor who was armed and firing a weapon at a Los Angeles apartment complex late Wednesday night, according to authorities.

This event took place around 10:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and Louise Street in Northridge. The officer stepped in as the man discharged a rifle, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

“It sounded like multiple shots were fired,” recounted a resident. “Definitely more than ten shots—pretty loud and scary. At first, I thought it was just fireworks.”

The off-duty officer, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, confronted the shooter before discharging his weapon. It’s reported that the man called 911 after the incident.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and fortunately, the officer did not sustain any injuries.

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), praised the officer’s actions, stating they were “brave” and aimed at protecting themselves and others.

McLaughlin further elaborated on December 31, stating, “An off-duty ICE officer courageously responded to an active shooter situation at his apartment complex. He used his firearm defensively to safeguard himself and others, engaging with the shooter.” She expressed relief that the officer remained unharmed while safeguarding the community.

The LAPD is currently investigating the shooting, and no other injuries were reported.

This incident comes on the heels of a recent DHS announcement highlighting that ICE apprehended some of the most serious criminal aliens during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. McLaughlin remarked that while families were enjoying the holiday, ICE was actively removing criminals to help protect neighborhoods.

Details from the LAPD regarding the matter have not been released yet.
