Celebration Outside Brooklyn Jail as Maduro Faces Charges
A vibrant crowd gathered outside a Brooklyn jail, celebrating the incarceration of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who face serious federal drug-terrorism charges.
The atmosphere was electric as attendees chanted slogans like “Down with the dictator,” “Shame on you,” and “You scumbags!” in a show of defiance against the couple.
Among the more than 200 protesters braving the cold was Rony Chirinos, a 21-year-old Venezuelan who relocated to New York from Maracay three years ago due to the Maduro regime. “I’m really happy to see the dictator fall, but the regime hasn’t completely collapsed yet,” he expressed, his determination clear. “I hope everything crumbles. I want no one left.”
Juskerry Mathieu, 27, joined her 11-year-old son in the festivities as honking cars passed by, with others waving flags and chanting “Finally” and “Hail Venezuela” in Spanish. “We’re celebrating the fall of the Maduro regime!” she exclaimed, overjoyed.
Another attendee, Jesus Rodriguez, also 27, reflected on the significance of the moment. “I came to see President Maduro punished for all the bad he did to our country. I’m thankful for what Trump did for us today. There’s hope now, and I want to return to my family.”
A Venezuelan police officer eventually addressed the crowd, calming them by confirming that Maduro was indeed behind bars. “We’re inside,” he announced through a megaphone in Spanish. “Go home. Please return to your family. Hug them. He’s inside.” The gestures felt a bit reassuring amidst the chaos.
Earlier that day, U.S. forces conducted a high-stakes military operation in Caracas, capturing Maduro and Flores. They were brought to New York, arriving later that night. Footage showed Maduro walking in the Chelsea DEA office, casually saying, “Good night. Happy New Year.”
Maduro and Flores now face indictment on federal drug-terrorism charges and are expected to appear in court as early as Monday.
