The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is currently raising funds in response to the Trump administration’s arrest of Venezuela’s leader, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, deemed as illegitimate socialists.
An email from the DNC stated, “Another unconstitutional action by Trump, who seems to view the Constitution as just a suggestion, is on the way.” They asserted that while Congress holds the war powers, Republican leaders are cowardly avoiding confrontation as Trump directs an unauthorized military action against Venezuela. According to them, Trump’s promise of peace has instead led to disorder.
“It’s crucial that we elect more Democrats to hold this administration accountable,” the message continued.
This email was sent shortly after President Trump ordered Maduro’s arrest due to a hefty list of accusations, including drug trafficking and possession of weapons against U.S. interests. DNC Chairman Ken Martin also issued a statement criticizing the arrests and the actions of the Trump administration.
Martin expressed concerns, stating, “This is a significant betrayal by Trump. His actions have thrown the U.S. into an unpredictable turmoil in South America. As his control diminishes, he appears willing to jeopardize the safety of Americans and disregard the Constitution in a desperate bid to cling to power and attention.”
Maduro, who has remained in power after several contested elections, faces multiple drug-trafficking charges from U.S. authorities. There have been rewards announced for information leading to his capture, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
In 2020, U.S. courts described President Maduro as a central figure, if not the leader, of a major international drug trafficking operation linked to the Venezuelan regime, which aimed to inundate the U.S. with cocaine.
