Editorial Board Discusses Trump’s Actions Against Maduro

The editorial board expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s recent military operation against Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores. They labeled the move a significant win for American interests, despite anticipating a predictable reaction from Democrats.

In their piece titled “Justice in Venezuela,” the board celebrated the reaction to Maduro’s overthrow, noting its global resonance, especially among Venezuelans. They described Trump’s decision to detain Maduro as one of the boldest presidential actions in years and marked the operation as a clear tactical success. The board emphasized the importance of ensuring a stable and prosperous Venezuela moving forward.

Further, the board commended America’s national security assets, arguing that the events in Caracas highlighted the unmatched capabilities of U.S. military, intelligence, and cyber operations.

They characterized the operation as a major win for U.S. interests, pointing out that just hours before Maduro’s arrest, supportive officials from China engaged in talks with him, while he also enjoyed backing from Russia, Cuba, and Iran. It was noted that many Venezuelans would likely remember those who supported their oppressor and those who helped in his removal—yet the editorial warned that simply ending Maduro’s presidency wouldn’t be enough unless it also reduced the influence of U.S. adversaries in the region.

The board referenced a press conference held at Mar-a-Lago as a crucial moment sending messages to various international leaders, suggesting it highlighted the implications of Maduro’s hold on power despite Trump’s warnings.

Questions were raised about the implications this move would have on Iran in the context of ongoing anti-government protests, as well as Cuba’s government following remarks from Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

However, the board advised caution, suggesting that Trump reconsider his stance on Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Colina Machado for the presidency. They urged against support for Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, questioning Trump’s opinion that Machado lacked respect domestically while implying Rodriguez was a poor alternative.

The publication warned that relying on Maduro’s vice president would likely lead to unfavorable outcomes. They asserted that Maduro had seriously misjudged Trump’s determination regarding Venezuela, which had worsened the situation for him.

They pointed out that Trump’s offering of resignations to Maduro could have led to a comfortable life abroad, yet he remains in a precarious situation that may end in tragedy. This represented a significant error on Maduro’s part.

While acknowledging both Trump and Biden view Maduro as a criminal, the board recognized that there are legal uncertainties around this operation, especially considering Maduro has upped the reward for information related to his arrest.

Noting potential concerns over information leaks, they emphasized the importance of consulting lawmakers on such matters.

In conclusion, the board highlighted the “tough decisions” and challenges that lie ahead, yet found reasons to celebrate this shift. They remarked that Maduro had long stood as a symbol of Latin American collectivism’s failings and suggested that he should now spend the rest of his life in a humane prison in the U.S. His fall, they declared, is ultimately good news.
