Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticizes US involvement in Venezuela

Sheinbaum Rejects U.S. Intervention in Venezuela

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum strongly criticized the recent U.S. intervention in Venezuela and firmly dismissed the notion of American troops entering Mexico. She underscored her government’s commitment to national sovereignty during a news conference held in Mexico City.

“We categorically reject interference in the internal affairs of other countries,” Sheinbaum stated, referencing official documentation provided by her office.

She elaborated, “Latin America’s history is quite evident: intervention has never led to democracy, nor has it resulted in lasting happiness or stability. Only the people can forge their future, decide their own course, and exercise sovereignty over their resources.” It’s a perspective that resonates with many who’ve studied the region’s tumultuous past.

In a related operation last Saturday, U.S. forces carried out a mission in Caracas, securing the safety of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from their residence.

Maduro is facing serious charges in the U.S., which include conspiracy related to narco-terrorism and cocaine possession, among other serious allegations, while his wife faces similar counts.

Sheinbaum declared Mexico’s sovereignty and self-determination as non-negotiable principles. This statement comes amid remarks from President Trump, who suggested Mexico needed to improve its handling of issues following the detention of Maduro and Flores.

Trump claimed on an Air Force plane that he considered Sheinbaum a “great guy,” yet voiced concern over the influence of cartels in Mexico. He stated, “We want Mexico to do it, and they can do it, but… the Mexican cartels are very strong.” There seems to be a tension here, perhaps reflecting differing views on how best to tackle these pervasive issues.

On the subject of U.S. intervention, Sheinbaum’s response was clear: “I don’t believe in invasion. I don’t believe they take it seriously.” She also mentioned that Trump has frequently expressed interest in allowing U.S. troops into Mexico. However, Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s firm stance against such interventions, stating that they are not necessary for the country’s stability.

She did share that Mexico is indeed collaborating with the U.S. to combat drug trafficking and organized crime, issues that are critical for both nations.
