Senator Ruben Gallego presents legislation to prevent Trump's invasion of Greenland

Sen. Gallego Introduces Bill to Prevent Military Action in Greenland

Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) put forward a bill on Tuesday aimed at stopping President Donald Trump’s intentions regarding Greenland.

Gallego emphasized the necessity of legislative action, asserting that Congress needs to prevent any reckless military decisions from Trump. This bill joins a series of Democratic initiatives focused on curtailing Trump’s potential military interventions, particularly after events in Venezuela involving President Nicolás Maduro.

“With rising food and housing costs putting immense pressure on families and inflation increasing, it seems Mr. Trump is trying to distract the public with threats of war,” Gallego mentioned. He highlighted Trump’s connection to high-profile scandals, suggesting that these distractions could lead to harmful actions, such as targeting countries without substantial justification.

“Venezuela’s situation illustrates that we can’t overlook Trump’s reckless behavior. His actions are jeopardizing American lives and damaging our global reputation. This amendment is meant to clarify that Congress won’t support unlawful military engagements,” he added. Gallego underscored the importance of compelling Republicans to take a stand against what he described as chaos instigated by Trump.

The senators pledged to push for a ban on military actions in Venezuela if Trump were to initiate an attack against the country.

Over the weekend, President Trump expressed to reporters on Air Force One that he believes “America needs Greenland,” referring to the territory of Denmark, citing “national security” as a justification.

Stephen Miller, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, defended Trump’s comments during a CNN interview, stating that Greenland “should be part of the United States.” He questioned Denmark’s claim to Greenland, wondering about the legitimacy of its territorial control.

Miller remarked, “Greenland’s population is merely 30,000 people. What rights does Denmark have in claiming it? What justifies their control over the territory?”

Furthermore, Trump pointed out the U.S.’s role within NATO, arguing that controlling Greenland would be in the best interest of ensuring security in the Arctic region. He insisted that Greenland’s status is crucial for NATO’s interests.

In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen stated on Facebook that his nation will not be swayed by superpower posturing.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any U.S. military aggression towards a NATO member would threaten the alliance itself, adding that such actions would undermine the security structure that has existed since World War II.
