Al Gore Critiques Trump’s Exit from Climate Initiatives

Former Vice President Al Gore expressed strong disapproval on Wednesday regarding President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the United States out of climate change efforts tied to the United Nations.

Gore emphasized his belief that the “climate crisis” is the “most important challenge of our lifetime.” He referenced the crucial roles of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), asserting that their ongoing work is vital for ensuring a stable future for humanity.

Gore criticized the Trump administration for severing connections with international organizations, stating that this move undermines years of established diplomacy and climate science, while fostering global mistrust.

In a memo, President Trump outlined the withdrawal from the aforementioned initiatives and declared intentions to disconnect from various other international organizations. He categorized the IPCC as a “non-United Nations entity,” although the IPCC identifies itself as the UN’s primary authority on climate science.

Furthermore, the memorandum mentioned that Trump deemed continued involvement in these organizations against U.S. interests. He noted a shift from cooperative international frameworks to what he views as a system of expansive global governance that is often misaligned with national priorities, as described by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Gore, who served as vice president under President Bill Clinton, famously lost the 2000 election to Republican George W. Bush.
