Incident in Minneapolis Leads to Fatal Shooting

On Wednesday, a 37-year-old man from Colorado was shot and killed in Minneapolis following an attempt to run over a federal agent with his SUV.

The events leading to Renee Nicole Macklin Good’s death were recorded on video. The footage shows Good’s SUV, which was allegedly positioned to obstruct traffic during a federal immigration operation. Despite repeated commands from law enforcement to exit the vehicle, she accelerated toward federal agents, prompting them to draw their weapons and fire.

“We can accept that this woman’s death is a tragedy while acknowledging that it was a tragedy of her own making.”

Some media outlets quickly created a sympathetic narrative around Good, portraying her as a victim of harsh federal agents, contrasting sharply with the past coverage of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot by a Capitol police officer five years ago.

The Associated Press contributed to this portrayal. They published an article titled, “The woman killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis was a mother of three, a poet, and a woman new to Minneapolis.” Notably, it mentioned Good’s attempt to assault a federal employee only well into the piece, seeming to suggest this was a characterization pushed by “Trump administration officials.”

Before addressing the implications of her death in front of her partner, the AP contextually stated:

  • “She was a Colorado-born American citizen with no criminal record aside from a traffic violation.”
  • “Macklin Good described herself on social media as a poet, writer, wife, and mother, expressing her experiences in Minneapolis.”
  • “Her Pinterest profile featured her smiling with her child, alongside posts on tattoos and home décor.”

Some outlets even questioned the federal government’s portrayal of Good, suggesting she was merely “stepping forward” when shot. The AP stated she was a “devout Christian” who “enjoyed singing.”

In sharp contrast, the coverage of Ashli Babbitt’s death by similar outlets depicted her as a supporter of conspiracy theories, while Good received a more positive framing as a community-oriented neighbor.

Vice President JD Vance commented on Good’s case, asserting, “It’s tragic, sure. But it’s also a consequence of her choices. Don’t interfere with federal operations and don’t try to run over officers.” This sentiment has found some support among Republicans, with former President Trump describing her behavior as disorderly and aggressive.

While the media narrative fluctuates between compassion and condemnation, it’s evident that public reactions will continue to shape perspectives on such incidents.
